BIOGRAPHY Award-winning artist Therese LaChance Ely lives and paints in Fremont, California. She is known for her “Sierra-scapes”, inspired by backpacking and canoeing adventures in the Sierra Nevada mountains and other off-road destinations. Her paintings often begin with a mini sketchbook, brush, and camera tucked into a pack pouch. Her work, whether rendered in oil, gouache, watercolor, or accented with collage, is completed in-studio. “My goal is to capture both the tranquility and exuberance that is the beauty of nature”. Therese began painting in childhood, taking both private art classes and California state enrichment classes. Her university work earned a degree in biology and chemistry. After leaving a career in analytical chemistry to raise three children, she resumed her artwork; being inspired by teachers such as Gerald Brommer, Dale Laitenen, and Steven Quiller. The encouragement of her husband, Gary, and his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, have been invaluable in Therese’s fulfillment as an artist and provided the opportunity to access the places she loves to include in her art. Therese proudly shows her work at the Fremont Art Association Gallery, Ohlone Arts, and Jan’s Art Studio. She has twice been named “Artist of the Year” by the Fremont Art Association, and has served in several association offices, including two years as the body’s president. Therese also teaches small groups of young adult artists at the studio where she paints.
